Life’s Milestones (Prom)

WOW!!!  Is all I can say.  It has been a whirlwind of emotions the last few weeks.  It started with my son turning 16 and then going off to the prom.  Such an exciting time, but also stressful and very emotional as a parent.  As teenagers, this is a time when the kids become more and more independent.  As you may or may not know, there are both pros and cons.

Take a listen to my video to hear about my emotions and dealing with being a parent of teenagers:

There are so many milestones along the way to your child becoming a teenager.  Starts with getting their first tooth, crawling, walking, off to preschool, kindergarten, riding a bike, going to their first dance, first goal in soccer, hitting a 3 pointer in a basketball game.  I could go on and on…the point is, when we are in it we have many emotions.  We also feel like that moment is the hardest or most special, but then another milestone comes up and you feel something different.  Every stage is unique with some being difficult and others just memorable.  How do you get through it all?

I see so many events happening this time of year as we are getting close to ending the school year.  I feel it is so important to have open and honest conversations with our kids.  There are so many lessons to be learned.  How do we as parents let them go but also have control in order to be sure they are making smart decisions?

Here are just a few tips that have helped me along the way:

  1. Before they leave for an event have an open conversation about making the right choices, maybe even give them some “if-then scenarios.
  2. Tell them how much you love them and always leave on a positive note.
  3. Have faith in a higher power that they will be safe.
  4. Know that you instilled good values for them to make the right decisions.
  5. Check in on them but also give them some freedom in order for them to learn to be responsible and independent.  This also shows them that you trust them.

These are just a few thoughts, tips and some of the emotions we feel as parents of teenagers reaching certain milestones.
